Identify your subject. What will your map be about? Clarify your intent. What will your map do? Think action words like Explain, Narrate, Persuade, or Describe
Audience: Who is the MAp For?
Will this map be for experts or novices? Will the map be presented to a large group (such as a conference) or a small group of individuals? Audiences may be made up of core professionals, non-core professionals, the general public, or a combination of any of these groups.
Medium: How Will Your Map be Viewed?
Possible mediums include printed maps, displayed maps, and projected maps. Printed map considerations include size and color options. Displayed map considerations include size, color, and resolution. Projected map considerations include color, resolution, and the environment (dark room vs. light room.)
